# Mold licensing by state

Only a handful of jurisdictions license mold professionals. These are the ones Mold Roster covers. Louisiana also licenses mold remediation contractors (LSLBC) but isn't listed yet.

## Texas

## What are Texas' mold licensing rules?

* A TDLR licence is generally required to assess or remediate mold when the affected area is 25 contiguous square feet or more.
* The same licensee may not do both the assessment and the remediation on the same project.
* Mold assessment consultants write the remediation protocol; licensed remediation contractors follow it, and the assessor does the post-remediation check.

## Florida

## What are Florida's mold licensing rules?

* A DBPR licence is generally required to perform mold assessment or remediation for pay on areas over 10 square feet.
* A licensed assessor generally may not remediate a property it assessed (conflict-of-interest rule in s. 468.8419).
* Florida licenses people, not companies, so check the individual who will do the work.

## New York

## What are New York's mold licensing rules?

* A NYS DOL licence is required for mold assessment or remediation of areas over 10 square feet (residential and commercial).
* The assessor and the remediator on a project must be independent of each other.
* The assessor writes the remediation plan and later issues the post-remediation assessment.

## Washington, DC

## What are Washington, DC's mold licensing rules?

* If there is 10 square feet or more of indoor mold, assessment and remediation must be done or supervised by a DOEE-licensed professional (DOEE).
* DOEE issues separate two-year licences for mold assessment and for mold remediation.
* Since June 2026 DOEE no longer does residential mold complaint inspections; housing code complaints go to the Department of Buildings (DOEE).
